Eating for Youth

The foods that we eat have an effect on our personal appearance and hygiene, mainly your skin and bones. This is why most of us are told not to eat too much chocolates and sweet foods by our parents when growing up. And, as we grow older this request is just as essential to maintain a youthful look and feel. In essence, our outer appearance is the produce of our inner contents.

Ingredients such as white flour and sugars are very commonly found in foods. Unfortunately, these ingredients are high in calories yet offer little in terms of nutrition. So, if the foods you usually eat have wholegrain alternatives, make the change. For example, choose whole wheat bread instead of your usual white bread. Nowadays, the supermarket is full of wholegrain substitutes which makes it easy to switch from the refined foods.

Try to stock your diet with more salads and vegetables as these foods have high nutritional values and low amounts of calories. Most vegetables out there supply you with the necessary vitamins and minerals needed to maintain healthy skin, good eyesight and a strong immune system. Vitamin C is a great resource in the fight against premature aging. Foods such as tomatoes, apples, oranges, spinach and carrots make healthy and tasty choices.

To maintain a healthy body, protein and fat are needed. However, stay away from saturated fat as these are not healthy for you. Eat low-fat dairy products to limit the amount of saturated fat that you digest. Protein is abundantly found in meat such as chicken and beef and can also be found in beans, broccoli and cauliflower.

Monounsaturated fats and omega-3 are also required by your youthful physic. Fatty fish such as salmon, rainbow trout and kippers are a great source for Omega-3 as well as vegetables such as dark salads and parsley. For your monounsaturated fats go for foods such as avocados, olive oil, hazelnuts, brazilian nuts and almonds.

Omega-3 fatty acids have also been found to enhance your nerve transmission, increase your serotonin levels and help in long term memory and learning abilities as you grow older.

Carbohydrate foods have the ability to release energy slowly and maintain blood sugar levels so don't cut yourself off of these foods. Your brain, nervous system and muscles all benefit from these offerings. Once again, wholegrains are best for your source of carbohydrates.

Maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet will help you looking and feeling young over the years so keep at it.
