Ancient Remedies for Modern Day Maladies
Have you ever wondered why there's a sudden surge in the interest for Alternative Medicine today? Why are more and more people flocking the natural health section of our food stores across the nation buying lotions and potions that are once considered "primitive"? What do homeopaths and nutritionists, massage therapists and Ayurvedic practitioners have to offer to our modern civilization that boasts of high tech medical gadgets and breakthrough drug discoveries?
Many believe the rising health care cost may be one of the contributing factors for this sudden back-to-nature movement. People tend to take more control of their health nowadays due to the high cost of health care. More importantly, patients who take the natural approach believe that they are more in control of their health and body.
Modern day medicine tends to be so advanced so as to forget the human element behind every patient. Herbal medicines in general are known to be less painful and less toxic compared to their modern counterparts. Sometimes modern medicines can't help enough or are slow in the curative process so patients lean toward ancient remedies and herbs in the hopes that it will have a speedier and more positive effect. This has been proven true in several cases.
Herbs, Acupuncture, and Aromatherapy are some examples of ancient remedies that are widely used today as an alternative way of healing. Success stories have lead experts to believe that most maladies plaguing our modern civilization can be effectively treated not with the newest scientific breakthroughs but rather by the oldest remedies from centuries past.
While natural therapies have been called the wave of the future, they're actually much older than our present Western treatments like surgeries, antibiotics and vaccinations to name but a few. It is believed that herbal remedies have been around for 5,000 years. Aromatherapy, for example, dates back to ancient Egypt as Egyptians used fragrant oils to soothe their minds and bodies. Ancient Greece and Rome on the other hand used hydrotherapy to cure their illness. While modern medicine has a very scientific approach Alternative Medicine usually offers a more spiritual approach. This is perhaps the reason why it arouses doubt among medical practitioners. Alternative Medicine practitioners find ancient remedies more balanced and healthier as they are very natural and attuned to humans as compared to modern medicines which, according to them, are products of chemical experiments and artificial procedures. Moreover, they argue that modern medicine has been natural from the very start until science fundamentally changed how it was defined. Whether by changing their diets and relaxing with meditation, patients tend to believe that by opting to "go natural" the quality of their lives have dramatically improved. Patients in general understand ancient remedies or herbal medicine more than their modern counterparts. According to them conventional medicines are inclined to be too scientific and too rational to understand while Alternative Medicine takes faith, spirit and wisdom.
As modern medicine becomes ever more complicated and costly, a growing number of people are turning to ancient remedies - simple, traditional, decidedly low-tech methods of preventing and healing illness and solving our modern day maladies.
