Fall is the time for bon fires and many people love to gather with their family and friends around a fire in the evening hours and on the weekends. If you find that you are doing this often enough, you might be thinking about building an outdoor fire pit. But should you? Before you go digging up your yard, there are a few things that you should consider.

How often would you use the fire pit? If the answer is only a few times a year, you might want to pass on digging a pit just yet. The truth is that a fire pit does change the traffic flow and look of your lawn. A burnt patch of grass from the last bon fire will blend in and grow back more quickly and with a lot less work than a hole would. Also think about mowing around the pit and if you have any small children. These considerations might just not be worth having a fire pit that you will only use a few times.

If you plan on using the fire pit quite often, on the other hand, go ahead and build one. A fire pit saves your yard from frequent burns and also lessens the likelihood that you might catch your entire hillside on fire. A fire pit also gives you a designated place to hang out so you will be less likely to want to move the fire “spot” around on your property. If you have small children, though, be sure to construct a cover out of scrap metal to prevent accidents when the pit is not in use.

Since fire pits are inexpensive to make, cost is not really an issue when considering putting one in your back yard. All you need is a little time to devote to the project and some stone or rock which can be found naturally around your property or close to a river or stream.

Of course you may prefer to purchase one of the great looking portable firepits that are available in a variety styles and materials. When you are entertaining, a portable fire pit is easy to move around and set up in the place that suits you best. They have the added bonus of being easy to clean.
