Absinthe - a legend, a myth?
The production of absinthe started at the end of the 18th century in the – Val-de-Travers - in Switzerland, where the first distillery has been founded by – DUBIED Père & Fils. Later it was Henri-Louis Pernod – he married Emélie, the daughter of Dubied - who started the first distillery in France – but also there it remained a beverage attached to the regional places where the liquor was produced. In 1830, in colonial times, when Algeria has been conquered, the French military took bottles of absinthe, which had the reputation in those times curing malaria and dysentery. So Absinthe became the loyal fairy protecting and assuring the french soldiers. After coming back from their campaign, Absinthe was introduced to the Cafés of Paris and from now on inexorably associated with the Belle Epoque of Parisian bohemia. Rapidly it became the spirit of the Fin-de-Siècle Paris. Today’s absinthe has its roots in the rich history of those past times, reminding the smoky Cafés and all those visionary artists and intellectuals in their endless reverie of rebuilding the world. The prohibition of Absinthe has been lifted in almost every country in 1920. The legalisation movement of absinthe began in 1981. In the meantime the prohibition has been repealed in most European Countries. The fabrication of absinthe is based upon the distillation of a mélange of plants soaked in alcohol. It owes its name to wormwood - Artemisia absinthium, a plant known to the French as grande absinthe - and to a lesser degree the plant Artemisia pontica, or Roman wormwood, which they call petite absinthe. These plants give the liquor known as absinthe, its intrinsic bouquet and bitterness. Today, you can buy Absinthe from various Countries like France, Switzerland, Czech and Germany on the internet. There are different ways drinking absinthe. In the traditional ritual you take an absinthe glass, put an absinthe spoon over the glass, on the spoon place a cube of sugar - the whole thing should be placed under the tap of a fountain, which is filled up with fresh water - then let drop the water on the cube of sugar and this really drop by drop. You can also try an absinthe recipe and enjoy your absinthe mixed with some other stuff. But don't forget not to abuse alcohol since absinthe contains a lot of it!
