How To Get Fitness For Boxing
I am unashamed to admit that I am a boxing fan. I make no apologies. My parents were fans, so I grew up watching it. They were especially keen on Muhammad Ali. The only time that I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime was to watch the Cassius Clay, as he was then, versus Sonny Liston fight. It was an education for everyone. Clay was so light on his feet, a supreme example of boxing fitness, and Liston lumbered around like a washed up has been.
The more athletic boxers have always appealed to me. I'd rather see good footwork and solid boxing technique than brute strength. Often, the lighter weight categories provide more entertainment than the heavyweights. There's nothing more boring than seeing two heavyweight boxers just clinging on to each other round the ring. I can't stand to see an overweight, flabby boxer. A boxer in his prime should be the epitome of boxing fitness. This is achieved thru the correct diet and training regime.
Seeing a big, brute of a boxer with his skipping rope is truly amazing. You wouldn't dare tell him it's a girly thing to do. They are masters at the art of skipping and it's great for boxing fitness. Another thing you see in every feel good boxing movie from Rocky to The Champ is road work. The boxer jogs in the early morning cold, urged on by his trainer. It all helps to build endurance and stamina. In the gym, the boxer will work the speed ball, to practice quick reactions, and the heavy bag to practice power and timing.
If you want to get fit, it's a good idea to use some of the methods used forboxing fitness. It's fun and it works. You can buy boxing gloves, speed balls and heavy bags. There's no reason why women can't do it either. Think of Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby.
A lot of people disapprove of boxing and I can understand why. I just think it's a choice between consenting adults. You can get a bit of boxing fitness without signing up for sparring or matches. It would give you confidence too, and if a mugger pounces on you one night, you may just give him a surprise. Kick Boxing is also very good training to get you fit. So, if you want boxing fitness, go buy that skipping rope and don't be shy.
