Introducing the iPilatesWorkout
Each day, Pilates instructor Sarah Christenson is helping her students through their Pilates routines - however, she’s not in the same room as them.
Christenson has recorded her Pilates workouts onto downloadable files for mp3 players and iPods, instantly transforming personal listening devices into personal trainers. She has made a number of audio and video recordings for athletes of all fitness levels -including yoga enthusiasts, golfers, and even skiers.
The idea came to Christenson after she lost her voice one day from teaching 10 hours of Pilates. Her husband then gave her an iPod, which she didn’t even know how to use at the time. But after she learned how to use the device, she recorded some routines and gave them to her students. “It was the first time I’d ever seen them truly listen to me,” says Christenson.
Her new iPilatesWorkout is growing rapidly. She now has more than 50 local students listening to her audio and video routines. Christenson has also been targeting golfers with her PilatesForGolf routines that players can watch on their video iPods and cell phones between holes. Butch Harmon, former golf coach to champion Tiger Woods, is giving Christenson’s iPilatesWorkout to his students, and a number of other West Coast studios are quickly snatching up Christenson’s audio routines as well.
Downloadable workout routines for personal listening devices are one of the newest and hottest trends in fitness, and many forms of activities are taking advantage of this rising opportunity.
Christenson says her iPilatesWorkout is different because it incorporates personal instruction for mat work with the use of Pilates equipment. To make sure that her students are fully prepared, she encourages them to take five training classes before starting the program on their own with their earphones.
Christenson has even designed customized workouts for some of her students. This way, students can take their personal trainer with them - and with the high costs of working with a personal trainer face-to-face, this seems like the next best option. Christenson is now hoping to expand her iPod programs to encompass a wide variety of sports, and is looking into manufacturing preloaded mp3 players.
