Expensive Plaid Curtains
We recently remodeled our kitchen, informal dining room and formal dining room areas in our home. Previously we had false ceiling tiles in the kitchen and informal dining room. This area was opened to the formal dining area that had vaulted ceilings. We tore out the ceiling tiles and sheet rocked the area and had the ceiling sprayed to match the formal dining room area. The informal dining area has a large window and the formal area has windows that run from floor to ceiling. There is an archway that separates the two areas. The informal area has tile and the formal area has carpeting. I wanted to find curtains for the two areas that would give each room its own appearance, but also be complementary.
The windows overlook our backyard garden area. We live in the country so there is no need for privacy curtains, however we do need something to help reduce the heat from the sun in the formal area during the summer months. We accomplished this by using decorative pleated shades that can be pulled up under a valance. I met with a decorator and showed her pictures of the areas. She suggested using plaid curtains in the kitchen and informal dining room. When she first said this my first reaction was to say I did not want plaid curtains. She began showing me examples of plaid curtains and I soon realized that this would be a great solution. I did not like floral designs or theme type fabric, but plain fabrics seemed too boring. The walls in the kitchen and informal dining area are a sunny yellow and the cabinets in the kitchen are painted white. The window sills and frames are also painted the same white in these two areas. One of the fabric samples was a blue yellow and white plaid. The plaid curtains would be lined in white to given the fabric substance. I explained that we did not need privacy curtains so she suggested going with a valance. This would make the window areas look larger and would draw people to look out the window rather than at the window. This seemed like a great idea to me. I was shocked at the price she quoted me for the simple valance. I told her that this
was beyond my budget.
I met with a friend for lunch and told her how disappointed I was about how expensive the plaid curtains were. When she found out I wanted valances she said I should sew them myself. I had not thought of this. It certainly would be easy enough. After lunch I went to a fabric store and found a great plaid fabric. I also bought an inexpensive white fabric for lining. I told the clerk the width
of the window. She said that I should buy triple the amount of fabric so that the plaid curtains would have enough fullness. I took the fabric home and had sewed my plaid curtains in less than two hours and had saved two hundred dollars. This allowed me to spend more money on the curtains for the formal dining area.
