Every internet user should be aware that not everything is as it appears. And anyone banking online etc. should know about a credit card spoof(otherwise known as phishing or a hoax).
In these deceptive emails which can be difficult to spot, they generally ask you to click a link back to the "spoofing" web site, in which they will as you to provide up "update" sensitive personal information. Generally they will bait you in they will generally allude to and urgent or threatening condition to your account.
If you are suspicious at all of being spoofed, don't even click the link. Simply clicking the link could subject you to background installations similar to spy ware which will log every keystroke, in turn supply any password you use regularly. As well as virus's that can disrupt your computer.
What they look for. 1. Password or Pin 2.CCV (Credit Card verification #) 3.ATM/Debit or Credit Card Number 4.Social Security Number 5.Bank Account number
These are some tips that can help you protect yourself from becoming a victim of spoofing.
1.Make sure your computer has the most up to date anti-virus software and firewall installed and monitoring your computer at all times. Generally this type of software needs frequent updates on new virus definitions so make sure these are up to date as well.
2.Never click on a link in an unsolicited email. especially those asking for personal information. Even if you don't supply anything, these thieves can still attack your computer with key logging virus's.
3.Check with your bank. If you believe you are being spoofed, make sure to check with your bank on the matter and they will be able to investigate the problem further.
4.Type the link directly into your browser. If you are unsure of the link go directly to your banks web site through a browser(IE,Fire fox etc.)
5.Always have a login cookie. Most online banking sites offer a "remember password" option. Spoofing sites will not be able to remember this password set on your banks website. Note: Never use a cookie on a shared or local computer.
6.Change your password often. It is recommended to change your password every 30 days. Contact your bank to find out the steps to change your passwordonline.
7. Change your banking pin often. It is recommended to change your ATM pin every 30-60 days. Contact your bank to find out the steps to change your ATM pin as well.
8.Keep track of your account. Keep in contact with you bank and monitor your accounts daily to make sure there is no suspicious activity.
