Wallet Stories
You have probably asked yourself at some point or another where your precious wallet is while you were searching the clutter of your home, office or bag. This small useful storage device that probably contains non only cash, but also some of your most important personal documents and cards, has caused you to exhale heavily that it was not in the possession of a stranger but was in fact misplaced at an office draw, house shelf or bag pocket.
The wallet was developed in the West almost immediately after the introduction of paper currency in the 1600s. Since its first appearance, it has gone through various alterations concerning its size, the materials used, and its design, so as to accommodate people’s needs. Made from leather, various fabrics, Velcro or even plastic, the basic wallet design has remained mostly unchanged during the late twentieth century.
Today’s modern bi-fold wallets are pocket sized tools used to store money, credit cards, driver licenses, identification documents, and many other valuable pieces of personal information. People nowadays are able to purchase their wallet from different stores and choose the one that fits best their personal taste and needs, selecting from a vast variety of designs, shapes, colors, and of course, prices. But whichever the design or the brand of a wallet maybe, the fact still remains that wallets usually contain money and valuable information for their owner, making them extremely desirable in the eyes of possible thieves.
Acting against such common threats, many people, who are aware of the dangerous reality of highly skilled pickpockets, tend to watch out for suspicious characters that sit beside them on the bus or subway train, keeping their eyes or even hands over their valuable possessions. But unfortunate incidents always happen and even if you have never suffered the cruel reality of having to report your credit card stolen in order to avoid getting charged for purchases you have never made, you do probably know at least one person that has gone through such a stressful experience.
Keeping yourself on alert against such possible threats is not enough though. For that reason, well-prepared travelers, for instance, carry money bets instead of wallets in order to protect their belongings and keep them hidden from the eyes of thieves. Others decide to attach small chains to their belts and wallets, in order to discourage crooks. Yet again, even those who are fully aware of the possibility that their wallets can get lost or stolen have at some point wondered where they last saw their wallets, before yelling with relief the miracle phrase “I’ve found it!”
