Super Swing Stunts
I love swings! Nothing quite simulates the feeling of flying like a swing. And the best part is that you can actually control how high you go. Do you remember the first time you discovered the magic of swings? Hop on, kick off and you have sprouted wings, are in a spaceship, or aboard a magic carpet. For such a simple design, it is amazing the amount of fun that can be had on a basic child swing. For those not content with the pendulum motion, grab a friend (often a younger brother or sister) and let them sit facing you on your lap. This maneuver has many names: the crab, spider, and Tricky Nicky and is fun for smaller children, because they are not alone on the swing. For the imaginative swinger, ride on your stomach with your arms and legs stretched out and you are Superman. Or if you have two swings side by side, you can play “bumper cars” by taking turns walloping each other. Fun Games Your imagination is all that limits you when it comes to fun games on a swing set. You can have contests to see who can swing higher or jump farther off of the swing. One great game, Frogger Ball, is like dodge ball, but with a twist. The swingers must dodge a rubber ball while others attempt to hit them. When hit, you trade places with the person who hit you with the ball. Some Cool Tricks Some tricks on swings are harder to master than others and can be a little bit dangerous, so be careful when trying these stunts. There is the ‘Upside-down Wrapper Roo’ which entails leaning back, while wrapping your legs around the swing ropes. This one is fun and easy to learn without being very dangerous. The ‘Tarzan’ is relatively simple, but may take some work in order to get the timing right. You have to pump hard enough to get up adequately high and then prepare to jump off. Just after you jump off, instead of letting go, you grab one side of the swing and whip back around, like Tarzan. And a jungle call never hurts anything either! An additional great feat is the ‘Parachute’. In order to do this trick, you slip out of the swing and without letting go, lower yourself as the seat slips up your back. Eventually you will be hanging onto the seat, while your feet are dragging behind you, like a parachute. The ‘Flipty Do’is another exciting trick, which is basically a back flip off of your swing. In order to accomplish this aerial wonder, swing to a good height and as you reach the apex going backwards, flip your legs up and over your head. The swing will swing away without you and you will end up just below the apex. It may take a couple of times before you land on your feet, so make sure to attempt this in sand or somewhere soft. Swing-related Jargon Here are some common words that refer to swings and swinging may not be familiar to those of us who have not been on a playground for a little while. Pump: The rhythmic shifting of your body weight in order to increase height and speed on a swing. Cherry Bumps: A small bump that occurs after swinging high and then freefalling. The ‘bump’ happens when the seat of the swing abruptly stops the rider’s freefall. Over-the-bar: A term referring to swinging so high that you can either see over or actually swing all the way over the bar. Swings were always my favorite equipment on the playground. They are great, because they are so versatile and can be made from an old tire and a rope or chain and high quality rubber. There are baby swings and child swings, swing sets, rope swings, garden swings, and playground swings. So if you are looking to reclaim your lost childhood or simply provide a little more fun for your children, swings are the way to go!
