Leather Shoes
Shoes that are made of leather are going to take a special kind of care if you are going to keep them looking their best. When you are caring for your leather shoes, the first thing you want to do after wearing them is to clean them with a special leather cleaner to clean away the dust and grime that has accumulated. To keep the leather soft and supple, you should then apply a leather conditioner to the shoe as well. After conditioning, you can then go on to polish the shoe, preferably with a cream polish, since it usually lasts awhile and is easy to apply too. After you give them the final polish, you should apply a weatherproofing substance to help protect your shoes in any weather.
Nubuck and Suede Shoes
Suede and nubuck shoes look great, but it can be hard to keep them looking good because of the materials. If you want these shoes to stay looking as good as the day you bought them, you need to make sure you use a special stain and water repellent on your shoes that is made especially for these materials. This should help repel the water, but if you notice that the water is not running off or beading on the shoes, it is time to reapply. You should also carefully brush these materials to get rid of dirt and keep the material in good condition. After brushing, it is important to use a special conditioner to keep the materials soft and pliable.
Athletic Shoes
One of the most common problems with athletic shoes is that they begin to look dirty very quickly. You can keep these shoes looking new by using a special shoe shampoo to get rid of dirt and stains. Scuffs are another common problem with athletic shoes, but you can get rid of these scuffs by using scuff removers or special products designed to whiten your shoes. There is even a whitening spray dye that can be used to cover unsightly scuffs on your shoes. Many times, the laces on athletic shoes start looking very dirty and grungy but you can improve the entire look of your shoes by purchasing new shoe laces for the shoes.
Avoiding or Curing Odor in Shoes
Since, many times, you are wearing shoes for hours at a time, having smelly shoes is a common problem. One way you can avoid stinky shoes is by never wearing nylon socks with them. It is best to wear only cotton socks with your shoes if you want to avoid a nasty odor. You can also prevent odor in your shoes by alternating the shoes you wear. Never wear the same pair of shoes more than one or two days in a row so they have a chance to air out and dry out. If your shoes are already smelly, you may want to consider sprinkling some baking soda in your shoes and letting them sit overnight. The baking soda will absorb the moisture and help your shoes smell better. Sometimes it is the insoles of the shoes that are causing the shoes to smell. If this is the problem, you can purchase special insoles to go in your shoes that fight odor and keep your shoes smelling fresh.
Taking the proper measures to care for your shoes can keep them looking and smelling great. It may take you weeks to find the perfect pair of shoes, but taking a few short minutes to care for them from time to time can allow you to enjoy them for years to come.
