Home Security-"It Takes a Thief"
While surfing channels the other day I stumbled upon a show on the Discovery Channel (which I never watch) that caught my eye-"It Takes a Thief"- a relatively new show on the channel.
The premise of the show is simple. Two very good ex cons, who specialized in home burglaries, Matt Johnston and Jon Douglas Rainey, "target" homeowners and show step by step how easy it is to burglarize their homes and then the twist-how to prevent such dastardly deeds from ever happening again-all on tape.
"Our goal with the show is to help people realize that a burglary can happen to them," Jon said. "Each week, we show that everyone is vulnerable and the more information and awareness that gets out there the better."
The show I saw showed a single mom who lived in a very nice neighborhood with her mom and her 12 year old son. When she volunteered to be the "victim" she knew she had some problems. But as she put it "people don't care". They think it will never happen to them.
So under the delusion that the guys would be coming back in a few days she went about her business as a real estate agent from a home office.
That same day, much to her chagrin Jon literally walked into the house while she was working upstairs and took conservatively -100,000 worth of goods. Items taken included some priceless family mementos, her laptop with all her business info, her purse with keys to a week old SUV and her credit cards.
She had no clue as to what was happening-yet he was within 15 feet of her. He had so much stuff he barely made it out of the house. It took him all of five minutes. Matt had the whole thing on tape.
She was so mad when she saw Jon later she nearly punched him out even though she knew this was going to happen for the show. The feeling of devastation was so overwhelming from the home invasion.
Then a team came in and did a home security makeover that would prevent a similar home invasion. It was a powerful lesson for the victim and the viewer.
Why are these lessons so important? In 2004 the Bureau of Justice reported that:
-77% of all crime was property related
-17% of all crime domiciles were violated by a burglar
-85% of all burglaries the offender gained entry into the house or other building.
Remember this: property crime occurs every 3 seconds, a home burglary every 15 seconds. On average, 00 worth of goods are taken from each burglary/home invasion.
The moral of the story: every homeowner can take some simple steps that will go a long way to making their home more burglar proof. They include some home alarms, maybe some security cameras, and definitely some non lethal self defense weapons to protect you and your family from a home invader.
Chances are very good that you are reading this because in some way crime has touched your life or you want to be proactive and protect yourself, family, home, or business from the ravages of crime. That is the first step.
