Choosing the right loft or bunk bed. What are the options?
You have made the decision to purchase a bunk or loft bed for your child’s room, but you have discovered that you are really not very informed concerning them and how to go about choosing the right one for them. By following the recommendations provided below you should be secure in knowing that the one chosen is right for them.
The first thing to do when looking at purchasing a bunk bed is to sit on the lower one of the two and see that it able to hold your weight and also that there is another head room between you and the bottom of the top bunk.
Another thing to do is shake the bed vigorously and see if it stable. You do not want to purchase one that the first time your child climbs on to it start to move around.
Ask the shop where you are purchasing the bed from if it meets all necessary safety standards and has been testing vigorously so that it meets these standards.
Look to see if the guard rail on the top bunk is actually fitted around all sides of the bed and make sure that it is not loose when pulled on or pushed against (you don’t want your child rolling over in bed at night and the guard rail collapses and they fall out).
Ensure that the beds have support slats in place which will provide ample support to the mattresses and also make sure that the mattress fits correctly into the bed frame, there should be little or no gap between the edges of the mattress and the beds frame.
Make sure that all the corners and edges of the bed are smooth and clean, you do not want your child injuring themselves on something that should not be there.
The ladder provided with the bed should be sturdy and easy for your child to climb it in safety.
But overall just make sure that you use your common sense when choosing a bed whether it is a bunk or loft version for your child. It is well to remember that all children love to jump up and down on their beds as well as climbing on them, so safety should be uppermost in your mind when making a selection. Once your are sure that the bed you have chosen is safe then you can decide on what type of style you want, whether it will be wood or metal, and the colour of it.
