Number five: The Greeks called it Pentad. It represents a new level of cosmic design: the introduction of life itself. We encounter fiveness from our hand to the stars on flags. It is the pentagon and the pentagram, whirling spirals. The dodecahedron is known as the quintessence of nature, encompassing and infusing all four elements, solids, gases and electronic fire with the life they cannot create by themselves alone. The Pentad carries the flag of life. Pentagonal symmetry has long been revered for its profound insight into living nature and to the powerful psychological hold it has upon people.
The five-pointed star is the key to nature’s fecundity and generative powers, providing the freshness, fullness and fertility of life. The archetype of fiveness expresses itself as living forms and in the attributes of living creatures. A pentagon is among the more complex constructions. It was so revered through the centuries that its construction was kept secret by various societies who recognized its dominance in nature and its potent effect on human nature. It was used as a sign for the members of the Pythagorean society to recognize each other.
The principle of regeneration is found in the whole representing the many parts. In a broccoli for instance, are found all the overall pentagonal groupings. Five major clumps contain constellations of smaller and smaller pentagonal structures. Each life form itself can be enclosed in a pentagram, and the self-symmetry can be found everywhere. The Golden Mean, which is based on the Fibonacci sequence, is characterized by the Greek letter Phi. It is not a number, it indicates a relationship. A core theme in ancient philosophy is that of the human as a microcosm of the whole, the macrocosm. It refers also to our physical configuration. The human body itself models greater self-replicating wholes. Pentagonal structures are also visible in the arts, and all classical paintings, statues and structures are based on a form of the pentagon. Number six: the hexagon is a natural phenomenon, encountered in beehives to faucet handles. The message is that efficient structure, function and order are occurring. These qualities occur simultaneously. Hexad is at the intersection of time, space and power, or structure-function-order. Multiples of six, particularly twelve, thirty-six and sixty, emerge from the principles of the natural framework in mathematics, nature, the symbolic arts, and everyday affairs. The twelve-fold structure can be found in architecture, religion in the twelve tribes of Israel, and the Chinese and European courts were organized on a duodecimal cosmic ideal. The hexad has unique properties as a doubling of three and partakes in the Triad principle of balanced structure. The hexad expresses its self-similarity in self-reinforcing structure-function-order.
Hexagons appear endlessly in human inventions, providing maximum efficiency of materials, labor and time. It works in situations requiring strength and stability, using the fewest materials and straight lines. Nature uses the hexagon in the arrangements of atoms and molecules, or in a froth of bubbles, snowflakes, and quartz crystals. Inside the body, human cells join in a close-packed hexagonal pattern to act in concert. Ancient tribal societies were modelled on a twelve-fold pattern of the constellations they perceived in the night sky. They divided themselves into twelve provinces, corresponding to a zodiacal month. Countless societies have regulated themselves on the twelve-fold pattern, as well as their symbol and art. They saw themselves and their culture breathing in unison with the turning earth and the stars. The zodiac was used as the ultimate allegory of initiation. For the initiates, the stars were translated into tools of self-knowledge.
