Why Should I Think About A Digital Camera
It's true that I haven't rushed to hop on board the digital photography bandwagon. As an amateur photographer, I have a couple of film cameras, an old manual Nikon and a nice autofocus Canon Rebel, and I wasn't particularly tempted to check out the digital craze up until lately, even though each of my children had them for years now. But recently my dad gave me his mid-level Olympus (he didnt like the menus), and Ive been giving it a try. And, surprise, surprise! I find it great fun, and it takes great pictures, too.
My most favorite feature about the camera is evident no film. My father gave me two (bless him) substantial memory cards, and I can take an amazing amount of pictures before running out of storage. I dont have developing expenses for photos that I dont really want now that Ive seen them (I don't EVER pay to develop my pictures), and since I can actually see how they look on the spot, I can delete anything I don't like to save the storage for other pictures. Taking large numbers of photos lets me improve rapidly, and improves the likelihood of an excellent photograph as well, and with this camera its free. My camera has settings on it that let me to pretend I have film I can set film speed and tweak aperture/shutter speed options the same as with my other cameras, so I can utilize what I already know about photography, which I really like. Plus, seeing your photos right away is fantastic.
Another terrific thing about digital cameras is photo editing. I havent invested in Photoshop yet, but I have been looking at the Elements program during the next year. I simply use Googles free Picasa and sometimes my PhotoDeluxe program (it came free with my scanner), and just with these I can do an amazing number of really exciting things with my pictures. The best is being able to alter poor exposures (It's a sad fact that I don't always notice backlit situations). Now with a little adjusting, I can save these shots! I correct red-eye quickly, sharpen focus, adjust contrast, warm up colors, and remove excessive unwanted tint (such as from lamplight). Cropping is my favorite those lucky few who have their own darkroom crop their photos routinely, but the rest of us used to have to take what we got no longer! We can pick and choose, and revel in cropping unwanted background, excess sky we can even remove most of the shot and make it a close-up. Resizing is a snap want some wallets? No sweat. 8x10, 4x6, some custom size a click of the mouse and it's done And dont forget special effects. Limited only by the features offered by your software, you can turn your photo into a painting, add glow, filters, neon the only limits are your imagination and your software!
When you have your masterpiece ready to go, you can print it on special photo paper at home, or you can submit it to a professional photo processor. Using Picasa, you can click and send it to a processor via the internet, and get your professionally printed photos in the mail but you only buy and send those you choose. Also, you can easily put your pictures on a webpage, send them to your friends via email, or use them on a blog they are easy to share.
I think it's pretty obvious that I have been converted to digital. My love of photography has actually been revitalized by the pleasure of working with this kind of control over what you are doing. If you are still holding back, I recommend you just plunge right in. You won't regret it.
