Common Concerns Regarding Aquariums
Thinking that aquarium concerns are simple? Think twice. You might be surprised at how comprehensive other issues are. But this does not say that everything is complicated. We have listed here some of the major concerns aquarium owners have regarding this stuff.
Seeding a new tank- this is the process where bacterial colonies are created into a new tank. This requires gravel from the old tank which will help to initiate the growth of bacteria on the new set of gravel that will be added to the new tank or will replace the old ones. This measure is of great importance since decomposers are vital to creating a healthy environment inside the tank.
Upgrading to a larger tank- bigger tanks can obviously accommodate greater number of fish and is said to be of easier maintenance. However, the main concern is when stuffs from old tanks will be taken to the larger tank. Here’s how the process goes:
First, you must vacuum the old gravel. Be sure that you have recorded the pH level of the old tank including the water temperature which will be adopted in the new tank. Prepare for new heater and filter. You may use the old ones but it would be much better if you ill provide a new set. Let these then run for a day.
Afterwards, test the pH level of the water and adopt them level of the old tank. This will save your fishes from having to adapt to a new environment which put them at risk with unhealthiness or worse, death.
The next thing you would do is to move the gravel into the new tank and set up the decors. Fill the tank with water until it reaches 3/4s of its actual volume.
While a new filter is being used, it is still good to run the old filter for a week or two to transfer the beneficial bacteria that thrive on it. After this, you have to undergo an observation on the aquarium until nitrates and ammonia drops down to zero.
Aquarium lighting- Lighting plays vital roles in the maintenance of healthy environment both for the fish and the plants in your aquarium. Since most aquariums are placed indoors, it is rare that these are properly given of a good source of lighting as they would experience when they are in their natural setting. Fluorescent lamp is the advisable light to use since this resembles the natural light apart from showing off the real brilliance of your aquarium.
Cleaning the filter- Filter management seems to be one of the major problems for aquarium owners. Internal filers must be cleaned every month or I case of clogging. But whatever you do, NEVER use hot or warm water to clean filters as this would only kill the bacteria living in them. This is the concept included in biological filtration which concerns bacteria that breakdown various toxins and turn them into relatively helpful substances.
Fish selection- This basically concerns personal preference. However, a good combination of fish types will help determine the sound water environment. Be sure to check on fish that are not typically placed into aquariums to se if they would fit with other kinds.
There, now you have lesser thoughts pertaining to the preservation of a healthful atmosphere for your little friends.
