The period of 1968-1970 saw the arrival of credence Clearwater revival, with their hits green river and the anti Vietnam song fortunate son. But the classic rock revolution actually burst out in 1969 with Woodstock. The Woodstock Rock concert took place in Bethel, New York and witnessed a fan gathering of 500,000.
When you put together 500,000 fans with guitar distortions and Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Joe cocker, credence Clearwater revival, Janis Joplin and many more, what you get is the most electrifying event of the century. Jimi Hendrix became a legend and Woodstock was etched deeply into the hearts and minds of those who were there to see history happen.
The year 1969 also was a year of rock tragedy as it lost 3 stalwarts of the era, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Brian Jones of Rolling Stones and all three of them succumbed to drug overdoses. In the 70's, Classic Rock gave the world some of the greatest talents that the music industry had ever witnessed.
The 1970's was about great bands, great hair and great sound. The popular mainstream of the 70's was dominated by the Rolling Stones and new bands with guitar contorted sounds were catching on like wild fire. Lead guitarists came into the forefront with their solos that set the stage afire. David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Brian May, Tony Iommi, David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore became legends of the guitar world.
