NFL: Waiver Wire Week 9
NFL: Waiver Wire Week 9 By WagerWeb.com and edited by Ecobika Sports Betting Finally we are now in Week 9, which is the last week of byes and the weekly struggle to field a competitive lineup. Now is the time where you need to really assess your team and figure out which positions you need help in for the stretch run and (hopefully) the playoffs. Going team-by-team and let you know which players might be on your waiver wire and are worth picking up for the rest of the year. Arizona – QB Matt Leinart: Leinart has had an up-and-down start to his career.
Carolina – All of their top skill players are likely taken. Chicago – RB Cedric Benson and TE Desmond Clark: Thomas Jones solidified his starting RB role last week with a monster effort, but Benson should be getting the bulk of the goal-line work going forward, and this is the last week you could probably get Clark after his huge game last week as well.
Dallas – QB Tony Romo and RB Marion Barber: Romo looked very solid against the Panthers last week, and Barber has been the best backup RB in the league thus far. I probably would only get Romo in a keeper league, but he’s going to be a good QB for a long time.
Detroit – QB Jon Kitna and WR Mike Furrey: Kitna and Furrey have turned into a great combo, and you’d do well to get either of them.
Houston – TE Owen Daniels: After last week’s 90+ yard, 2 TD performance, Daniels put himself on the radar as a TE you might end up starting. Pick him up now if you need help. Indianapolis – With the offensive talent on this team, all of their primary skill players are taken, with the possible exception of TE Dallas Clark. Jacksonville –WR Matt Jones: Jones was the No. 1 WR in Jaguar country prior to the season, and now that he has returned from injury, he’s trying to take over that spot yet again. He has the talent to do it.
Minnesota – QB Brad Johnson, WRs Troy Williamson/Marcus Robinson: All of these guys are serviceable but nothing more. I’d use them only if desperate or in a very deep league. New England – WRs Doug Gabriel/Chad Jackson, TE Ben Watson: All three of these guys have had their moments thus far, but it remains to be seen which guy is going to become Tom Brady’s favorite target. New Orleans – I’m sure all of the Saints' primary guys (Brees, Bush, McAllister, Horn and Colston) are gone by this point, so I can’t recommend anyone else here. If for some reason any of those guys are on your waiver wire, pick them up pronto. NY Giants – RB Brandon Jacobs: Not that there’s anything wrong with Tiki Barber, but if the G-Men are close to the end zone, Jacobs normally gets the call. He’s a huge back and should be good for similar numbers he had the last two weeks (30-40 yards and a TD) on most weeks. He’s a great keeper-league pickup also as Barber has announced his retirement and Jacobs is next in line to be the No. 1 guy. NY Jets – RB Kevan Barlow: Even though Leon Washington has taken over as the top guy in New York, Barlow should continue to get some carries near the end zone and would resume No. 1 status if the tiny Washington gets hurt. Oakland – RB Justin Fargas, WRs Ronald Curry/Jerry Porter: I’m not sure what’s going on in Oakland with the RB situation. The Raiders paid LaMont Jordan big bucks to be their main guy but then when he was supposedly healthy last week, Fargas got the bulk of the carries. I’d go ahead and grab Fargas and hope for the best. Also, even though the Raiders have won two in a row, I wouldn’t count on them being good the rest of the year, so I’d suspect they’ll have to throw a lot to catch up. This gives Curry and Porter a shot to do some nice things in garbage time as teams double up on Randy Moss.
Philadelphia – It’s highly unlikely that there is anyone available from this offensive juggernaut. San Diego – QB Philip Rivers, WR Eric Parker: Rivers is the guy you want to target if you need a QB. He is maturing into a top QB this year, and Parker has become one of his favorite targets and is a great guy to grab if you need WR help. Seattle – QB Seneca Wallace: With the knee injury to Matt Hasselbeck, Wallace will be starting for the next two-three weeks. Fortunately for him, RB Shawn Alexander should return soon to take the pressure off, and Wallace has the ability to do well.
St. Louis – It’s been business as usual for the Rams, with QB Marc Bulger throwing all the time to WRs Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce, and RB Steven Jackson handling almost the entire rushing game. The Rams are not the place to look for backup help. Tampa Bay –WR Michael Clayton: Clayton has returned as a viable WR option and should be added if you need depth. Tennessee – RB Travis Henry and TE Ben Troupe: Even with the hugely disappointing game last week, Henry should continue to be the main man for the Titans. Troupe is a solid TE backup.
Well, that gives you a good outlook at guys you can pick up to help you the rest of the year. Best of luck as you get your team ready for the big upcoming games, and hopefully you’ll be ready to dominate!
