Storylines: Panthers try to win their third straight, while Browns look to build on last week's 24-21 victory over the Raiders...Browns quarterback Charlie Frye has thrown seven interceptions in 2006, tied for the most in the league...Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers is tied for the league lead in sacks (5)...Carolina will be without middle linebacker Dan Morgan (concussion) for the fourth straight game...Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith, who missed the first two games with a hamstring injury, has 17 receptions for 199 yards and a touchdown during Carolina's two-game win streak...Browns are tied for last in the league with 11 turnovers committed...Panthers running back DeShaun Foster (16 carries, 105 yards) and Cleveland's Reuben Droughns (25 carries, 100 yards) each come off their first 100-yard game of 2006...Browns cornerbacks Gary Baxter (pectoral) and Leigh Bodden (ankle) are both considered questionable for Sunday, as is Panthers corner Ken Lucas (neck, shoulder).


Fast Fact: Since 1989, the Browns have won road games on back-to-back weeks just once (2002) in 22 tries.


Prediction: Peppers will harass Frye into some more critical mistakes, and the Panthers will get to above .500 for the first time this year. Prediction: Panthers 24, Browns 9.





Buffalo (2-2) at Chicago (4-0), Sunday, 1:00 (Chicago -10.5)


Storylines: Bills head coach Dick Jauron, who guided the Bears from 1999 through 2003, returns to Soldier Field...Bears in search of first 5-0 start since 1986, when they won their first six... Buffalo running back Willis McGahee leads the NFL in rushing yards (389)...Chicago quarterback Rex Grossman has posted a passer rating of 100 or better in three of his four starts this season...Chicago defensive tackle Tommie Harris is tied for the league lead in sacks (5)...Bills linebacker Takeo Spikes, who has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury, is questionable for Sunday...Buffalo quarterback J.P. Losman has a 90.6 passer rating through his first four starts of 2006...The Bears have not had a 100-yard rusher this season...Bills are expected to be without starting guard Chris Villarrial (ankle), who played 116 games with the Bears from 1996 through 2003...Chicago is No. 1 in the league in scoring defense (7.2 points per game), has forced an NFL-high six lost fumbles, and is one of just three teams (Atlanta, Kansas City) that has not allowed a passing touchdown this season.


Fast Fact: The Bills are 0-4 all-time at Soldier Field, and have been outscored by a composite of 95 to 32 there.


Prediction: Bills will struggle to move football against the stingy Chicago "D", and Grossman will cash in on some short fields. Bears 20, Bills 6.






St. Louis (3-1) at Green Bay (1-3), Sunday, 1:00 (St. Louis -3)
Storylines: Packers try to snap a two-game losing streak at Lambeau Field, and also try to give first-year head coach Mike McCarthy his first win in the facility...Rams attempting to take over sole possession of first place in the NFC West, which they currently share with Seattle...Green Bay quarterback Brett Favre expected to play despite suffering a pinched nerve and possible slight concussion in last week's 31-9 loss to the Eagles...St. Louis wide receivers Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce both went over 100 yards in last week's 41-34 win over the Lions...Packers running back Ahman Green (rib, hamstring), who missed the Philadelphia game, is questionable for Sunday...Green Bay is the only team in the NFL without a rushing touchdown as Week 5 begins...Rams lead the NFL in takeaways (13) and turnover margin (+10), and are the only team in the league without an interception thrown.


Fast Fact: The most recent trip to Lambeau Field for Rams head coach Scott Linehan resulted in a 31-17 win for the Vikings, then featuring Linehan as offensive coordinator, in a 2004 NFC Wild Card game.


Prediction: Rams will be looking ahead to next week's first-place showdown with the Seahawks. Packers 29, Rams 26.






Tennessee (0-4) at Indianapolis (4-0), Sunday, 1:00 (Indianapolis -18) Storylines: Vince Young makes the first road start of his career for Tennessee...Titans franchise has not started a season 0-5 since the 1984 Oilers opened 0-10 en route to a 3-13 finish...Young was 14-of-29 for 155 yards with a touchdown, two interceptions, and a lost fumble in last week's 45-14 loss to the Cowboys...Indianapolis is 6-0 against Tennessee since 2002...Colts have won 11 straight against AFC South opponents...Indianapolis receiver Marvin Harrison leads the NFL in receiving yards (413)...Titans to be without defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, who was suspended for five games after stomping on the head of Dallas center Andre Gurode last Sunday, and will also be minus wide receiver David Givens (hand)...Colts will be missing defensive tackle Corey Simon (knee) and safety Bob Sanders (knee) against the Titans...Indianapolis leads the NFL in scoring offense (30.2 points per game)... Prediction: Don't overthink this one: it's Peyton Manning at home against the Titans. Colts 47, Titans 17.





Detroit (0-4) at Minnesota (2-2), Sunday, 1:00 (Minnesota -6.5)

Storylines: Game could be moved to Monday night if Twins/Athletics series goes to a fifth game...Lions seeking to avoid their first 0-5 start since 2001, when they started 0-12 and finished 2-14...Detroit also trying to snap an eight-game losing streak to Minnesota that dates back to 2001, and an eight- game losing streak at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome that dates back to 1997...Vikings are trying to snap a two-game losing skid, and are also trying to score 20 or more points for the first time this season...Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna has thrown for 622 yards with four touchdown passes and three interceptions in his last two games, and wideout Roy Williams has back- to-back 100-yard games...Minnesota could be without tight end Jermaine Wiggins (hamstring) and safety Darren Sharper (bruised quadriceps), who are both listed as questionable...Lions are one of three NFL teams (Denver, San Francisco) without an interception...Vikings have committed a league-high 38 penalties...Lions have allowed an NFL-high 10 passing touchdowns.


Fast Fact: Since 1993, the Lions are 1-11 at the Metrodome.


Prediction: Vikings are in dire need of a win heading into their bye week, and the Lions never play well at the Metrodome. Vikings 26, Lions 14.




Miami (1-3) at New England (3-1), Sunday, 1:00 (New England -9.5)

Storylines: Dolphins try to resuscitate once-high hopes for an AFC East title or playoff berth, while first-place Patriots try to build on a 38-13 domination of the previously unbeaten Bengals in Cincinnati last week...Pats rushed for 236 yards and three touchdowns in last week's win, with rookie Laurence Maroney leading the way with 125 yards and two scores on 15 carries...Miami was dealt a 17-15 setback in Houston...Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown still looking for his first 100-yard game since Week 8 of last season...Patriots defensive end Jarvis Green had three sacks of Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer last week...Miami won (28-26) in its last trip to New England, prevailing in Week 17 of 2005, when the Patriots opted to rest many of their starters... Dolphins have allowed an NFL-high 21 sacks of quarterback Daunte Culpepper...Dolphins head coach Nick Saban served on Bill Belichick's staff with the Cleveland Browns (1991-94).

Prediction: Yes, the Dolphins have been terrible, but look for them to hang around in a last-gasp divisional battle. Patriots 20, Dolphins 17.


Tampa Bay (0-3) at New Orleans (3-1), Sunday, 1:00 (New Orleans -6)


Storylines: Buccaneers rookie quarterback Bruce Gradkowski (Toledo), subbing for the injured Chris Simms (spleen), makes his first career start...Saints play their second game of the year at the Superdome after crushing Atlanta, 23-3, in a Monday night matchup in Week 3...Buccaneers, who were off last week, are 6-11 all-time following bye weeks...Tampa Bay trying to avoid a second 0-4 start in three years...Saints quarterback Drew Brees has thrown for more than 300 yards in two of his four starts this season...Buccaneers are last in the NFL in rushing offense (43.3 yards per game), and tied for last in scoring offense (9 points per game)...Tampa Bay running back Cadillac Williams, the 2005 NFL Rookie of the Year, is averaging just 2.8 yards per rush...Saints rookie running back Reggie Bush was limited to 22 yards on 11 carries in last week's 21-18 loss to the Panthers...Buccaneers are 4-1 in their last five games against the Saints, including three straight road wins in the series.

Washington (2-2) at N.Y. Giants (1-2), Sunday, 1:00 (N.Y. Giants -4)
Storylines: Redskins trying to win their third in a row, while Giants are attempting to recover from 42-30 disaster at Seattle in Week 3...Loser of Sunday's game will be alone at the bottom of the NFC East...Giants linebacker LaVar Arrington, who starred for the Redskins from 2000 through 2005, will face his former team for the first time...Redskins quarterback Mark Brunell is 42-of-57 passing (73.7 percent) for 590 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception in his last two games, both Washington wins...Giants are 3-14 all-time following a bye week, the worst mark in NFL history, and are 0-5 after an open date since 2000...Washington running back Clinton Portis and wide receiver Santana Moss both posted their first 100-yard games of the season in last week's 36-30 overtime win over the Jaguars...The Giants committed four first-half turnovers against Seattle, including three interceptions for quarterback Eli Manning...New York linebacker Carlos Emmons (chest) is out for Sunday...Giants are last in the league in sacks (2).

Prediction: This is more or less a must-win for the Giants, who go to Atlanta and Dallas for their next two. Giants 23, Redskins 17.


Kansas City (1-2) at Arizona (1-3), Sunday, 4:05 (Kansas City -3.5)


Storylines: Cardinals rookie quarterback and No. 10 overall draft pick Matt Leinart makes his first career NFL start...Chiefs quarterback Damon Huard, subbing for the injured Trent Green (severe concussion), will make his third start of the year...After having his streak of 100-yard games snapped at nine in Week 1, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson has gone over the 100-yard mark in each of his last two games...Leinart was 5-of-8 for 49 yards with an interception and a fumble in mop-up duty against the Falcons last week...Huard has a 106.9 passer rating...Arizona tied for the league lead in turnovers (11)...Chiefs defense has not allowed a touchdown in 10-plus quarters, and are one of three teams (Atlanta, Chicago) that has not surrendered a TD through the air this season...Kansas City head coach Herm Edwards has lost 10 straight road games since his Jets beat the Chargers in a 2004 AFC Wild Card game...Cardinals receivers Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald have just one 100-yard game each on the year.


Fast Fact: Cardinals running back Edgerrin James has failed to surpass the 100-yard plateau in eight consecutive games dating back to last season, which matches the longest dry spell of his career.


Prediction: Leinart will provide a spark, and the Chiefs defense will turn back into a pumpkin. Cardinals 21, Chiefs 20.


N.Y. Jets (2-2) at Jacksonville (2-2), Sunday, 4:05 (Jacksonville -7)

Storylines: Jets quarterback Chad Pennington, who was lost for the year with a torn rotator cuff suffered against the Jaguars last season, faces Jacksonville again...Pennington will again oppose another ex-Marshall University star, Jaguars signal-caller Byron Leftwich...Jets receiver Laveranues Coles is tied for the NFL lead in receptions (30)...Jacksonville cornerback Rashean Mathis leads the NFL in interceptions (4)...Coles (calf) is listed as questionable for Sunday... Jacksonville defensive tackle Marcus Stroud (ankle) and wide receiver Matt Jones (hamstring) both listed as doubtful...Jets quarterback Chad Pennington has posted a passer rating of better than 90.0 in each of his first four games...Jaguars allowed 481 yards in last week's 36-30 overtime loss to the Redskins...Jacksonville running backs Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew combined for 19 yards on 10 carries versus Washington...Jets are 0-2 in Jacksonville all-time.


Fast Fact: Chad Pennington posted an 18.6 passer rating in last year's 26-20 overtime loss to the Jaguars, the lowest single-game mark of his career.


Prediction: Jets don't match up well with physical Jacksonville defense, and Jags are not about to carry a three-game losing streak into the bye week. Jaguars 27, Jets 10.

Storylines: Two struggling Bay Area residents will meet in the regular season for the first time since 2002...Oakland still looking for first win of the second tenure for head coach Art Shell...49ers' offensive coordinator is Norv Turner, who was head coach in Oakland in 2004 and 2005...Raiders trying to avoid first 0-4 start since 1992, when they opened with four straight defeats under Shell...Raiders quarterback Andrew Walter (29.2 passer rating), subbing for the injured Aaron Brooks (pectoral), will make his first career road start...Oakland is last in the NFL in total offense (177 yards per game), passing offense (70.3 yards per game), and tied for last in scoring offense (9 points per game)...San Francisco is last in the NFL in scoring defense (31.5 points per game)...Niners are one of three NFL teams (Detroit, Denver) without an interception...49ers have lost a league-high seven fumbles on the year, including four coughed up by running back Frank Gore...San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith posted a season-low 27.4 passer rating in last Sunday's 41-0 loss to the Chiefs.

Storylines: Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens makes his return to Philadelphia, where he played in 2004 or 2005 before feuding with quarterback Donovan McNabb and Eagles management and eventually being separated from the team...Dallas can take over first-place in the NFC East with a win...McNabb suffered a season-ending hernia injury in a 21-20 home loss to the Cowboys last Nov. 14th, a game in which Philadelphia coughed up a 20-7 lead in the final four minutes...Eagles running back Brian Westbrook (knee), who missed the team's 31-9 win over the Packers on Monday night, considered questionable for Sunday, and No. 1 receiver Donte' Stallworth (hamstring) is doubtful...Westbrook leads the NFL in touchdowns (5)...Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb leads the NFL in passing yards (1,248) and touchdown passes (9)...Philadelphia defensive end Trent Cole is tied for the NFL lead in sacks (5)...Eagles lead the NFL in total offense (426.5 yards per game), passing offense (297 yards per game), and touchdowns scored (15).
