Boxing Notebook: Tyson Is Back

If the title made you jump into this article, you are not alone. Mike Tyson is the most recognized boxer around the world, and still the most feared. Watching him in action is like Chemistry 101: you never know what’s going to explode. Unfortunately, Tyson imploded inside and outside the ring, costing him his fortune, and is now reduced to a circus act in Vegas working out in public for change.

On Oct. 20 at the Chevrolet Center in Youngstown, Ohio, the former heavyweight champion of the world begins a "Four Round Exhibition World Tour" to help him pay his debts and possibly show the world he’s a changed man.

So why has the former baddest man on the planet decided to take part in four round exhibition bouts after being out of the ring for so long?



"I was a little overweight, smoking too much, and I started to get in shape," said Tyson. "I was training in Las Vegas, and 2,000 people a day were there. Why not do an exhibition? Sterling (McPherson, promoter) suggested we do a world tour."

How much Tyson is expected to make on his world tour isn't clear, but I’m sure his creditors are just happy to collect some more change. As for Tyson, it sounds like he’s taking this seriously:

"I'm truly nervous. I haven't done this for a while.



"I hate the business of boxing. When I said I hated boxing I meant getting to run and giving it the 100 percent you need.”



"I'm in better shape than I anticipated, I'll never be in the shape like I was young.”



"I'm extremely nervous right now."

The first leg of "Mike Tyson's World Tour" in Youngstown will be broadcast live in North America on cable and satellite pay-per-view beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET. The event is being produced and distributed for pay-per-view by Queensbury Media and Integrated Sports and will be available in more than 50 million homes in North America via iN Demand, DirecTV & Dish Network in the U.S. and Viewer's Choice & Bell ExpressVu in Canada. The suggested retail price for the PPV telecast is .95.

Darchinyan Still Showing Arce Love

Darchinyan (26-0, 21 KOs), will be defending his world titles against NABA/NABO champion Glenn Donaire (16-2-1, 9 KOs) on Oct. 7 as part of a Showtime Championship Boxing world title double header, broadcast live from the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

Promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, the main event will pit WBC/The Ring magazine lightweight champion Diego Corrales (40-3, 33 KOs), defending his titles against former world champion Joel Casamayor (33-3-1, 21 KOs) in the rubber match of their amazing trilogy, where each fighter owns a victory over the other

Toney-Peter II

I guess I wasn’t the only one who felt robbed. I predicted even at his worst James Toney would school Samuel Peter, and he did. But the judges were completely ignorant of his skills and favored the one-punch wonder Peter’s lucky punch. Well, thank God somebody is listening. The WBC has ordered an immediate rematch between these two boxers, and negotiations are in progress.

There were several reasons why the WBC made this decision:

1. First, for having been an extremely close fight which divided the opinions of the media and fans. This rematch will clear the air, and we will have an official indisputable challenger to our new champion Oleg Maskaev.

2. The WBC believes that at this moment there can not be a more interesting heavyweight fight than this rematch. There is a huge public demand for this rematch, and it will be very good for the promoters, as well as the prestige and the importance of boxing in the world.

We look forward to the matter being settled in the ring!

Miguel Cotto-Carlos Quintana Update

This fight is a done deal. After dealing directly with Bob Arum, Evangelist Cotto advised El Nuevo Dia that they came to terms and the fight will be officially announced soon.
