A Chorus Line Dances Back Into The Heart Of Broadway
A Chorus Line will open on October 5th, 2006 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. A revival of the huge 1975 original Broadway musical which had one of the longest runs in theater history with 6,137 performances before it's closing in 1990. A Chorus Line held the record for longest running show, until it was passed eventually by Phantom Of the Opera, which is now in it's eighteenth year on Broadway. Originally opening at the Shubert Theater and was received with legendary welcome and exit from New York, this falls opening is sure to bring old fans back while discovering a new fan base who is touched and overjoyed with a heartfelt storyline.
The final dance scene is what seems to have kept audiences wanting more and creating one of those rare Broadway experiences. When a group of 19 young cast members audition for a new musical opening on Broadway, their practice, dreams and hopes are all soon put on the line. Like today's television talent shows, where viewers are part of the emotion and are brought into the lives of individuals dreams, A Chorus Line had done the same thing well before such shows as American idol or Star Search ever existed in mainstream society.
This is more then a Broadway audition because Zach, the director, wants more from them then just some moves on a stage. He goes into the lives of each character and soon you learn of their past, from old loves to why they have been chasing theater as their dream. In the end, however, only 8 cast members will be chosen to be in the final Chorus Line. When the final 8 have been accepted and the new musical is set in place, the audience is blown away with a dance number which is breathtaking, inspiring and heartfelt to say the least.
A Chorus Line truly was a Broadway legend and one of those rare theater experiences which still today is talked about with exhilaration. The revival has a lot to prove and live up to. The question is, can a revival of such a New York legacy recapture the long running magic it once attained, or has a thirty year gap put to much time between the minds of one generations musical love and today's generation of musical angst. On October 5th, 2006 we will all see if the revival of A. Chorus Line can stand the test of time and awe audiences as it did for it's record breaking fifteen year historic run.
