Marquis Theater A Modern Musical Experience
John C. Portman, Jr., the architect/designer of the Marquis which was constructed in 1986, making it the newest legitimate theater to the New York Broadway theater district. Leased by the Nederlander organization the theater is not much to look at and lacks the "true" Broadway architecure of older more classic venues, the theater was built to be more moder, state of the art and offer confort and intamcy which many larger and older theaters simply could never create.
The Marquis theater which is located on the third floor of the Marriot Hotel, did pull off the original attempts, with plush rich red seating and extrodinary views of the stage from every seat in the house and the abilty to handle any production regardless of lighting and sound exuipment. These features give the modern approach to design a bright future for the Theater District of New York. The Marquis has mainly hosted musicals, although it has such abilty to handle any extreme production and opened it's doors to "Me and My Girl, a british comedy with Robert Lindsay who played the character of Bill Snibson who went on to win the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical. The production opened on August 10th, 1986.
The Marquis continues to play shows which gross large amounts at the box office. Currently playing and receieving rave reviews is "The Drowsy Chaperone" a musical comedy with a heart of gold. Broadway Drowsy Chaperone tickets are available from ticket brokers or the box office for a proce on average of eighty dollars. The Marquis box office is located on the Broadway side of the building, where a small gift shop is located which sells Broadway souvaniers. The walk into the lobby is not as exiting as older theaters, but painted with classic posters giving more to the modern look the owners went for. Through a dark alley filled with small lights which create a ambiance you head up an esuclator to the third floor where the Marquis Theater is located. Arriving early, a short trip to the eight floor would allow for some great views of New York City's Time Square before the show.
