What Is An eBook?
Thousands of years ago books came in the form of shapes and drawings on a slabs of stone or on a cave wall, stacks of papyrus, or words written on scrolls of parchment, all with the message that the writer was trying to convey. Over the years the methods of writing a story or getting information out to the general public has developed into quite the technical transformation with the introduction of the personal computer and the invention of the eBook.
eBooks (also known as electronic books delivered via digital delivery) are not new. Actually they have been on the Internet for quite a while and can be delivered in several formats like image, text, html, CHM, PDF etc. The popularity of the eBook has grown beyond anybody’s wildest expectations, in the last three years it has been reported that the eBook segment grew from 1,000 to over .3 million. While hardcover and paperback publications have dropped in sales by an estimated 10% to 43%, eBooks will most likely not replace paper books anytime in the near future. There is no telling of the possibilities, afterall, the cell phone didn't replace the home phone. People have car radios and iPods (mp3), but they still have a radio on the bedside table or the kitchen counter.
I’m sure books are here to stay; it’s just the way they are presented that could change. Now with the search for convenience people are always looking for ways to make everyday activities, such as reading, easier. eBooks, are faster to acquire, more compact, and even cheaper than conventional books. eBooks are also interactive which makes it easy to have as many eBooks at your disposal to read on your desktop computer, laptop, PDA or cell phone while at office, home or vacation.
This is one of the most unique and specific qualities that eBooks offer. eBooks remain on your computer for as long as you choose, and they can be read and re-read at your convenience. They can even be printed out and stored on the shelves of your traditional home library. The potential is virtually unlimited. eBooks are part of the new frontier of cyberspace. They are an entirely new medium for sharing marketing information, ideas, techniques, and expert knowledge. Each day the number of people accessing the Internet grows, causing the exposure of your eBook to increase incrementally. It's obvious why electronic self-publishing has become so popular so quickly.
eBooks are typically cheaper than printed books. You can buy an eBook any time of the night or day and have it almost immediately. Download it and do whatever you want with it. You can read it, print it out and even distribute it to your friends. While technology is making life easier for us, this will certainly change the mind of conventional book lovers and they make the switch to digital format more and more over the next few years.
In near future it is very possible that students will not be carrying tons of books with them for their schools but only a PDA or a laptop on which hundreds of eBooks will be saved as will be with the teachers. The school libraries will be keeping their books in digital format and saving lots of space and money and not to mention the trees that would be saved.
eBooks are easily and rapidly distributed online. For the aspiring writer it has never been easier to get your knowledge, information or story out to the masses. You just need a great concept, the ability to write it or to hire a writer, and the right software. They are also easily updated; they do not require a second print run. All you need is to go into your original creation and modify the text or graphics. Because of this flexibility, eBooks can change and grow as fast as you can type.
