Do You Have It? What Computer Users are Catching Every Day.
Computers are used everyday in our daily routines from work to a personal calendar at home and e-mail. Even though computers have transformed our lives from technology and communication standpoints, their use facilitates physical and mental demand on computer users. As a result of overuse, several health conditions can arise such as Repetitive Strain Injuries which includes eye strains, neck and lower back pain as well as headaches. Did you ever notice that when you first buy a new computer that it was exciting to read all of the information supplied with the computer because of the excitement? Such a document could be specific guidelines on how to maximize the use of the computer. The evolution of these guidelines was because manufacturers were forced to include such guidelines since there have been reported cases of health issues and complaints with overuse of the computer. Computers now have warning labels on some parts. The warning labels are imperative because computer users have to understand that they have to abide by simple guidelines so these related health conditions do not happen to them. The guidelines include proper back posture, Repetitive Strain Injury of the hands and arms is a hazard involves the incorrect use of the keyboard and mouse. Some occupations which have a high exposure to computer usage can cause injuries to tendons, muscles, and nerves. These injuries were the first reported cases of SI. Since the frequency and number of computer uses highly increases, these types of injuries are likely to become present in many people. As such, computer users are seeking treatment for these types of injuries. Some users report SI on their hands, wrists, arms, necks and shoulders. Tightness, discomfort, stiffness, soreness or burning, numbness and loss of movement are being reported by most medical personnel. Since SI is a preventative condition, computer users have to be educated and understand the preventative steps they can take to alleviate these types of conditions. These conditions can be very painful. Some people who no longer use the computer can have conditions develop, long after they stop using the computer. There are ergonomic devises such as palm rests, which maintains correct posture that can greatly reduce the severity of these conditions. It is best for the new and old computer users to know of the preventive steps that can be taken to reduce the severity of SI.
