Last night I was on my way to a friend's house to watch TV, because the TV that I have is black and white and gets just a few channels. So, when I had the opportunity to invite myself over to her house I was literally giddy with delight. And, since I'm one of the greatest houseguests that I know, I decided to stop and buy some snacks for the big night. After picking up an astonishing array of chips and tasty drinks I got in line; and then I saw it. Free balloons! I was really excited, until I read the fine print. The balloons apparently were reserved for the stores “little guests.” Now, I'm not a big guy, but I understood the point. I left feeling like the chips I was so excited for, were suddenly not enough. I'm talking about the power of the balloon. Enough to crush the hopes of a grown man.

If that's the case, just thing what it can do to a population of easily influenced, broken consumers who seek comfort in purchasing the goods that they didn't know they needed. I'm telling you advertising with balloons puts stealing candy from children to shame. In fact, sometimes when I see the balloon advertisements I think that the business is intentionally trying to see how far they can go to establish no link whatsoever between their product and the balloon; and still have it work. Balloons shaped like bears at car dealerships come to mind. Or how about the recent one where it looks like a guy dancing…he sells everything!

I see these advertisements and immediately giggle. I want to know the owner of the business, because they seem fun and friendly. I also feel a sense of comfort with the store or product. It seems that in today's cutthroat sell at all costs, it makes me happy to know this proprietor is more interested in my childish delight than in my hard earned cash. In fact, to me, balloon advertising is really somewhat of an oxymoron. Because, its not about the advertising or the sale, its about the balloon, and me…and probably puppy dogs and rainbows, too.
